Cairo

Cairo Governorate is one of the 27 governorates of Egypt. Located in the north of the country, it borders the Giza Governorate to the west, Qalyubia Governorate to the north, the Red Sea Governorate to the east, and the Beni Suef Governorate to the south. The governorate s capital and largest city is Cairo.

Cairo Governorate has a long and rich history, dating back to the Pharaonic era. The city of Cairo was founded in 969 AD by the Fatimid caliphs, who built it as their new capital. Cairo quickly became one of the most important cities in the Islamic world, and a major center of learning, culture, and trade. The city remained an important center under the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman empires, but it declined in importance after the conquest of Egypt by Muhammad Ali in 1801. Cairo was modernized under Muhammad Ali and his successors, and it became the capital of modern Egypt in 1922.

Cairo Governorate is located in the Nile Delta, in the northern part of Egypt. The governorate has a total area of 3,698 square kilometers (1,428 sq mi), of which 496 square kilometers (192 sq mi) are covered by water. The terrain of the governorate is varied, with desert plateaus, agricultural land, and urban areas. The climate is hot and dry in the summer, and mild and wet in the winter.
